Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Mar 22, 2021 | News

In 1987 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the month of March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Each March, Frontier Health seeks to raise awareness of people with developmental disabilities, they face and their need for inclusion in the communities in which they live. As a behavioral health provider for Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, Frontier Health has helped these individuals with supported housing, community integration services, and employment services.

Individuals with developmental disabilities are valuable members of our communities who are often stereotyped and face discrimination for the way they look or sound. Bullying, abuse, and neglect have been too commonplace, and we are far from where we need to be. By raising awareness, we can help educate, inform and help bring an end to the stigma these individuals have endured. Please join us in raising awareness on social media platforms by using the #DDAM2021

“I feel that our society has come a long way in the acceptance of people with disabilities, but I also feel that we have a long way to go to truly accepting them as a part of our community, our places of business/employment, and our lives. People with disabilities want to live like anyone/everyone else. They want a nice home, a job of their choice, to be a member of a church; they want friends and relationships.”
- Linda Henry, ID Residential and Behavioral Respite Division Director of Frontier Health
